In 2009, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the SAMS established the Swiss Clinical Trial Organisation (SCTO), which is designed to promote efficient, innovative and visible clinical research throughout the country, to deliver better treatments to society.

The SCTO is committed to providing high-quality, independent information and supports the general principle of clinical-trial data transparency. It addresses current issues and challenges in clinical research, and it liaises between various stakeholders with the aim of optimising and harmonising processes.

For everyone involved in research – including research groups from industry and academia, authorities, patients and the public – the SCTO serves as a hub, facilitating joint efforts to improve clinical research in Switzerland.

Since 2017, the SCTO has been a national research infrastructure funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, and by the SNSF.
