Further procedure

We kindly ask you to read the FAQ carefully before preparing your application. To complete the submission, please send the following documents compiled as a single pdf file to research@samw.ch:

 

  • Motivation letter of the applicant (max. 1.5 page) with:
    • Career plan
    • If applicable, the reasons for requesting an extension of the eligibility window as foreseen in article 7 of the program regulations must be explained.

 

  • Project summary (max. 1 page) with background, aims, design and methods.

 

  • Detailed research plan, elaborated with the thesis supervisor (max. 6 pages including tables and figures, excluding bibliographic references. Min. font size 11, min. single line spacing), with:
    • Current state of research
    • Hypotheses
    • Aims
    • Relevance of proposed research
    • Role of applicant in the project
    • NB: For projects that are embedded in or closely related to a larger research project (for instance, the supervisor's SNSF project), the relationship between the two projects must be described and the output expected from the grant specified (e.g., a first-author paper).
    • Detailed methodology
    • Planned experiments
    • Milestones and pitfalls
    • Timetable (showing the entire MD-PhD period and the planned grant period)

 

  • CV of the applicant with publication list (max. 3 pages). Pease indicate clearly the period of your undergraduate medical studies, the period of your MD thesis (if not completed yet, specify when it is planned) and the period during which you will be matriculated as MD-PhD student.
    All dates must include month and year.

 

  • Confirmation from the thesis supervisor guaranteeing, for the entire duration of the grant:
    • Personal and scientific supervision of the grantee
    • Integration into the research activities of the host institution
    • Adequate work space
    • Access to the necessary infrastructure
    • Amount of financial support offered (research costs, consumables, etc.)
    • Funding guarantee fo a 4th year (salary and research costs) to complete the MD-PhD

 

  • Confirmation from the head of the local MD-PhD program guaranteeing that the applicant is admitted as MD-PhD student and comply with all the local requirements.
    NB: please use the following template.

 

  • In addition, for applicants with a clinically-oriented MD-PhD project who intend to work in the clinics next to their research activities, confirmation from the clinic director guaranteeing that the time dedicated to the doctoral project will be freed up from clinical activities for the entire grant period.

 

  • Reerence letters (max. 2), on paper with official letterhead and signature (to be integrated in the application documents submitted by the applicant to the SAMS).

 

  • Copies of all relevant diplomas, and examination scores from medical school for years 1–6
    • If the medical degree was obtained outside of Switzerland, a copy of the original diploma(s) must be submitted with a transcript in English, German, French or Italian. Please add a copy of the full MEBEKO recognition decision if available.

 

  • If applicable, copy of ethics committee’s decision and other authorisations.

 

Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
