Principles

The Federal Government recognises the SAMS, in accordance with Art. 5 of the Law on Research of 1991,  as an “Institution for the Promotion of Research“.

The financial resources of the SAMS do not allow it to support major research projects; the Swiss National Fund is responsible for this. However, through various foundations the SAMS can provide support, with amounts up to a maximum of CHF 60,000.-, for research projects in general-practice medicine (RRMA), in the area of the neurological sciences (Ott Foundation and A&D Foundation), in the area of medical illustration (Hartweg Foundation) and in the field of ethics (Käthe-Zingg-Schwitenberg [KZS] Foundation).

In the context of the MD-PhD Programme and in the framework of the Swiss Foundation for Medical-Biological Grants (SSMBS), the SAMS awards scholarships for the next generation of researchers.

Also, applications for financial support for special events, for minor projects or for publications may be submitted to the Expert-appraisal Committee of the Fonds SAMS. As a rule, the maximum amount granted is CHF 5,000.-. Applications for larger amounts must be approved by the Board of Management of the SAMS.

In general, for the submission of applications the appropriate forms must be used (see box, right).
